Living in zero gravity

Posted on June 21, 2012 by Bruce Hayes

There’s something about laying down that invigorates the soul… Not as in sleep through the winter hibernation mode but rather the put your feet up after a thanksgiving meal way. It’s in those moments where you stretch out all your muscles, yawn really big, and let out a bear groan that you feel perfectly relaxed. Or maybe that’s just me…

My new Serta memory foam bed, which adjusts six ways from Sunday, naturally has a “zero gravity” option. It slightly elevates both head and feet so that you’re laying in a position not unlike you were in the womb. In doing so, it completely eliminates pressure from every part of your body – levitating you like its the year 2050.  For me, this is the ultimate experience – stretched out experiencing zero G’s in the cool, calm stillness of my bedroom.

Of course having perfect peace in the bedroom is the goal of most people on this planet.  There are special paints, special sound makers, and – yes – even the perfect mattress.  But why does that peace have to be limited to the bedroom?  Why is it that we tell ourselves we can’t experience peace in most all other places and simply relegate ourselves to “that’s just the way it is?”

What if we “created” our own experience as we went through every single day?  What if we chose, when a situation happened “to us,” to acknowledge that there was a higher purpose at hand that not only guided us to that situation but can guide is through it.  Rick Warren explained it very well in his recent devotional “Five Steps for Handling Frustration” with my favorite being “turn the frustration into a funny, humorous event.”

The purpose here isn’t to prevent situations from occurring, but rather to engage them differently.  For me, it’s imagining I’m executing my life from my Serta bed and not letting life’s pressures affect me at my core.  With life on Zero G mode, I can choose how to react to every situation rather than letting the situation dictate it for me.  Yes, easier said that done.  But I guarantee if you picture yourself perched atop an adjustable mattress during your next frustrating moment, whatever it is happening to you won’t seem quite as serious.
